What is Ayurveda

An Alternative Medicine
5000 Years in the Making

Ayurveda is an alternative medicine system with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. An indigenous ancient medical science of India, it is more than 5000 years old — considered an upveda of the Atharva Veda.

Mention of the use of herbs for medicinal purpose is found in the oldest available written literature in the world — the Rigveda. The faith in the power of its principles, alongside the vast availability of herbs in India, has always been the thrust behind the survival of this scientific art of healing.

आयुर्वेद

Ayu + Veda

Literally, the word Ayurveda is a combination of two words: Ayu meaning life, and Veda meaning science. Thus Ayurveda is a science of life — not merely a science of diseases.

"Swasthasya Swasthya rakshnam, aturasya vikara prashaman"

The aim of Ayurveda — propagation of health and cure of diseases.

Why Kerala

The Source of
True Ayurveda

Kerala, with its abundant resource of medicinal plants, has a long history of folk medical traditions practiced by healers from all levels of society.

The arrival of the canonical Ashtangahrdayam stimulated the development of a new dynamic medical culture that would define Kerala Ayurveda for centuries.

A New Dynamic
Medical Culture

Certain Sanskrit-literate healers of Kerala adopted the Ashtangahrdayam as their source book while continuing to draw on regional folk and physical medical practices from diverse sources.

These sources included poison therapy and Kalaripayathu — the ancient martial arts of Kerala — weaving physical mastery and deep knowledge of the human body into the very fabric of Ayurvedic healing.

We Have Lost Our
Connection to Nature

Busy life is failing to maintain our natural health. The connection between nature and man has disappeared. Lack of vegetarianism and use of herbs has reduced the immunity of our body.

We all know the secret of health of our grandfathers — spiritual thought, use of herbs, eating and sleeping at the right time, waking at dawn, engaging in agricultural work. These were the reasons for their health.

An Indescribable Gift of
Mother Nature

There is nothing on this earth that can replace Mother Nature's gift — for the survival of man, for the preservation of his health, for the power to prevent diseases. Clean air, clean water, a clean environment are essential for us.

Ayurveda is suitable for problems related to the spine, bones, joints, muscles, skin, head, hair, vata, bile, phlegm and many other such problems. A permanent solution in a short time is the gift of nature.

Kerala's Ayurvedic Heritage
The Two Pillars of Ayurveda
I

First Pillar

Preventive Ayurveda

Yoga and herbal preparations — preventive Ayurveda

The preventive component of Ayurveda emphasises the need for a strict code of personal and social hygiene, the details of which depend upon individual, climatic, and environmental needs.

Bodily exercises, the use of herbal preparations, and Yoga form a part of the remedial measures — a daily discipline that keeps the body in alignment with the rhythms of nature.

Second Pillar

Curative Ayurveda

Herbal medicines and curative Ayurvedic treatments

The curative aspects of Ayurveda involve the use of herbal medicines, external preparations, physiotherapy, and diet — each carefully chosen to address the root cause of imbalance, not merely its symptoms.

It is a principle of Ayurveda that the preventive and therapeutic measures be adapted to the personal requirements of each patient — because no two constitutions are alike.

"Like scientific medicine, Ayurveda has both preventive and curative aspects — together forming a complete science of life."

"After years of chronic fatigue and stress, Sowkya's Panchakarma programme gave me back my life. The depth of knowledge here is unlike anything I have encountered."

— Priya Menon, Bangalore
